Every day in Australia approximately 9 people die by suicide and 150 people attempt to take their own life. This is more than 3,000 deaths and 55,000 attempts each year. In addition, thousands more will experience suicidal distress or thoughts of suicide. The impacts of the loss of life, suicide attempts and suicidal distress on families and communities are devastating.
Suicidal distress is a human response to overwhelming suffering that deserves to be met with compassion.
The National Suicide Prevention Office’s draft Advice on the National Suicide Prevention Strategy (the Strategy) proposes a fundamental change to the way we think and act on suicide prevention.
The Strategy was released for public consultation on World Suicide Prevention Day, 10 September 2024. The consultation will remain open until midnight Sunday 27 October 2024.
It has been designed to provide clear guidance for governments, service providers and communities on a comprehensive, compassionate and effective national approach to suicide prevention.
To strengthen the Strategy and provide governments with the most effective advice possible, it is important that we hear from a broad range of people with diverse views.
Feedback is welcome from individuals, organisations and communities. Click here to review the draft Strategy and Have Your Say.
