Mentally Healthy Workplaces during COVID-19 guides
It has been a challenging period for Australian workers, with many impacted by COVID-19, bushfires, flood and drought. The Commission, in conjunction with the Mentally Healthy Workplace Alliance, has created a series of evidence-based, easy to use guides to support the mental health and wellbeing of Australian workers and to encourage mentally healthy workplaces during COVID-19.
Mentally Healthy Workplaces and COVID-19: Emerging Issues
The Mentally Healthy Workplaces and COVID-19: Emerging Issues series provides organisations with expert insights and tips to address key challenges impacting workplace mental health. The guides also connect organisations to further sources of guidance and support.
The series includes:
- Helping people return to workplaces after extended periods working at home during COVID-19
- Strategies to support wellbeing of decision makers through periods of sustained pressure
- Identifying and managing fatigue and burnout during COVID-19
- The hidden impact of COVID-19 and sleep
- Creating mentally healthy hybrid teams in the recovery from COVID-19
- Responding to varied COVID-19 concerns in the workplace
- Supporting people experiencing post-COVID-19 syndrome

The Mentally Healthy Workplace Alliance and the National Mental Health Commission developed the guides to complement the Mentally Healthy Workplaces during COVID-19 resources released in 2020.
Mentally Healthy Workplaces during COVID-19 Guides
These guides have been created by experts to provide practical tips and advice on helping employers and employees look out for the signs that someone may need support, and assist them to find help when they need it.
Resources have been developed for:
- Sole traders
- Small business
- Medium to large business.
In addition, posters have been created to supplement the resources, with the aim of providing tangible and displayable assistance on:
- Recognising the signs that someone may need support, and
- Having a positive and helpful conversation about mental health and wellbeing.
The resources also help workplaces understand their obligations in regards to the mental health and wellbeing of their workforce and also include a guide on how you can have conversations about mental health and wellbeing in the workplace in a safe and supporting way.
